It is a common sight in Bangalore to see children with torn clothes,  Disheveled Hair, eyes full of hope, lugging a dirty bag on their tiny shoulder, picking bits and pieces of rags from the streets. Robbed of the right to parent’s love and affection, basic education and support from society, these children have no choice but to feed themselves on the leftover food thrown around by people. Apart from the rag-pickers there are also thousands of other children deprived of parental care and facing financial handships who need homely atmosphere. It is no wonder that many of  these children, devoid of basic schooling and cultural education, cultivate all the wrong habits and manners and end up as anti social elements.
It is estimated that the city of Bangalore alone harbours thousands of such children. It is the responsibility of any civilized society to take care of its  people, especially children like these. Hindu Seva Prathisthana offers a ray of hope for these children like these children in the form of NELE.

About NELE
NELE (Shelter)  a project of Hindu Seva Pratisthana was started way back in August 2000 to provide residential car to destitute children. So far, 10 centres have been established 6 in Bangalore and others in Mysore, Tumkur, Shimoga and Bagalkote. Over 260 boys and girls have found caring homes in these centers.Facilities provided to the children at NELE include:

  • Food, clothing and shelter
  • School based education, cultural education & social awareness
  • Sports, Music, Fine Arts, Sanskrit and Yoga
  • Awareness on health and hygiene

Shelter for the homeless

Nele Namma Mane, a home for underprivileged children, provides shelter for children rescued from the streets or from abusive and neglectful parents. Many of the children are brought here by the police or social workers to prevent them from falling victim to crime and social evils

There are 10 such homes in Bangalore and the rest of Karnataka. There is Nele Narendra (Mysore Road), Nele Niveditha (Ullal Main Road), Nele Premanjali (JP Nagar), Nele Chandana (Mamulpet), Nele Namma Mane (HBR Layout), and Nele Ashakirana (Bannerghatta Road). The four homes outside the city are Nele Dwaraka in Tumkur, Nele Ashrayadhama in Bagalkot, Nele Ajitha in Mysore and Nele Madhava in Shimoga. They house about 260 children in all, with girls and boys housed in separate homes. There is also a vocational-training centre at Laggere for school-dropouts.

Care for destitute children

The first Nele was set up in the year 2000, to provide residential care to destitute children. This was the vision of Shridhar Sagar, Director of Hindu Seva Prathishthana. Ragpickers, beggars, orphans, or children abandoned/neglected by their parents are the kind of children who are taken in and offered Nele’s facilties which include food, clothing and shelter and education too. The children are sent to different government and private schools where all their fees are taken care of by Nele. Besides, the children are also taught different sports, yoga, Sanskrit, and given training in whatever fine art they show interest in––music, painting, dance, etc.

NELE has changed lives of many underprivileged children, some of whom are now leading a successful life.
