Azad went to Allahabad where on 27 February 1931 he went to the Chandrashekhar Azad Park (Alfred Park then) to meet Sukhdev Raj. The police were notified of his location by an informer. He was surrounded with armed police and fire were exchanged. He was deeply wounded in the process of killing three policemen and wounding some others.
